Updated Listener Metrics for Artifical Streaming on Spotify

Spotify Removes Artificial Streams from Public Metrics

On November 7th 2024, Spotify will update their data systems to remove artificial streams from tracks’ all-time stream counts and artists’ monthly listener counts on the Spotify app.

Spotify usually catches and removes the majority of artificial streams before they reach the public (with those streams never being paid out to the fake streamers) but a small amount of artificial streams are not cleansed before their daily data is published and remain present in public metrics.
From November 7th on, these streams will be retroactively removed from monthly listeners and all-time streams counts on a daily basis.

Because of this, some discrepancies between the shown metrics in the Spotify App/webplayer and Spotify for Artists can appear, e.g. monthly listeners might appear differently on both sites if the artists were engaging in artificial streaming. If you notice different numbers ins S4A compared to the Spotify app, it could be possible that your songs have been streamed artificially.

The official statement by Spotify as to why they make this change is as follows:

“We believe changes to our charts and public metrics will lead to a significant decrease in artificial streaming. Removing key incentives for bad actors to inflate their streams artificially creates a level playing field, and upholds our user experience for consumers and creators alike.”

These days, artificial streaming is often used to bait artists into payments for placement in bot-driven playlists. For anyone noticing that something is wrong with their stream count, Spotify offers a web form to report any fishy playlists that include your music. This might help proactively prevent the punishments that Spotify imposed with their new rules on artificial streaming.
